The best way to prevent sexual abuse by sex offenders and predators is through educating the children. It is important to teach your children how to protect themselves.
How can we teach children to protect themselves?
We must understand that most sex offenders are average and ordinary -- they don't wave a sign letting people know they are sexual predators.
Many Sex offenders may be a leader in the church; the community; or business. Sex offenders rarely fit a classic type.
Make sure your children can trust you if they need to reveal an abusive problem to you. That you will believe them even if you would never dream the person would be an abuser.
Understand what is sexual child abuse and convey this to your children.
Anytime an experience seems to have a sexual meaning for the person instead of what is for the good of the child, it is abuse. For instance, if the attention is unwanted or inappropriate for her age, it is abuse.
Incestual sexual abuse can occur from words, a childs sight of something sexual, even if it does not involve him/her. If they are forced to witness something it is considered abuse. If a child is lead into any sexual activity with someone in a of higher power either through age, size or relationship, it is abuse.
Identify signs that your child may be targetted for abuse. Sex offenders seem to be able to intuitively know what child they can abuse.
They can usually tell through the child's body language, etc. They can tell if the child is fearful, passive, easily controlled. Teach your children that no one can make them do anything they do not wish to do.
Always trust your suspicions or intuitions. A sixth sense or "bad feeling" can stop possible sex offenders.
